An hour's flight from either Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, and recently World Heritage listed by UNESCO, Hoi An was a bustling trading port from the 17th to 19th centuries, only slowing down as the river silted up making it impossible for the larger ships to access the port. Almost all of the architecture, streets and ports are still intact, providing a unique blend of Chinese, Japanese, French and Vietnamese styles and cultures.
Hoi An is considered a '' Living Museum '', so there is plenty to see throughout the city. Being a very pedestrian-friendly place, with the Old Quarter closed off to all cars, walking tours are very popular - you can see a great deal in a day of casually strolling through the narrow streets and laneways. The shopping here is superb also the tailor-made clothes are fantastic, as are the local arts and handicrafts. Those wanting a more relaxing stay are looked after as well, with some lovely resorts on the nearby Cua Dai Beach.
